Billion (Bellignat / France; www.billion.fr) and die developer Polar-Form (Lahr / Germany; www.polar-form.de) will demonstrate the production of SD cards – high capacity memory for electronic devices such as PCs and digital cameras – on a Billion “Select” injection moulding machine at “K 2010” (www.k-online.de) in Düsseldorf / Germany in late October – see Plasteurope.com of 22.06.2010. A multi-cavity tool will be installed on a “Select” fully electric H80-50T – the unit has the smallest clamping unit of the range, which covers 50 to 400 t.
The machine to be demonstrated will be equipped with an 18 mm diameter screw, which has been specially adapted for production in polycarbonate, and a cooled runner mould from Polar-Form to produce the two shells (upper and lower) of an SD card. The total injected weight is 3.7g. The design of the mould allows for the polymer delivery passage to be separated from the part during the holding phase, avoiding an additional operation after production. At 296 x 246 x 316 mm the mould is very compact and can be mounted on very small tonnage machines. A closed cooling system in the mould ensures an optimised cycle time of eight seconds.
