Tethered caps for Coca-Cola / Compliance with EU directive

US packaging giant Berry Global (Evansville, Indiana; www.berryglobal.com) says it is now delivering a lightweight, tethered closure for carbonated soft drinks in PET bottles to the Coca-Cola Company.
The cap is designed to remain intact with the bottle, making it more likely to be recycled, instead of being littered.
Berry claims that over 400 mn closures have already been used on Coca-Cola bottling lines in Germany, Spain, and the UK, with the rollout expected to continue to the company’s other European plants.
The move is part of the soft-drink giant’s plan to comply with EU Directive 2019/204, which from July 2024 requires plastic beverage bottles up to three litres in size to use closures that remain attached to the container throughout their intended use (see Plasteurope.com of 23.05.2019).

Berry added that the lightweight closure features a special tamper-evident band that, once broken, does not impact the closure’s ability to remain attached and is positioned out of the way for drinking but can easily be reclosed.
In October 2022, the US company received the Technology Excellence Award from the American Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies (PMMI; www.pmmi.org) for these closures, which are sold under the brand name Proxima.
