US packaging manufacturer Berry Global (Evansville, Indiana; www.berryglobal.com) said it has reached an agreement with Austrian polyolefin group Borealis (Vienna; www.borealisgroup.com) for the delivery of chemically recycled polypropylene, but the company provided no further details about the pact except that it will have “access to first volumes” of the materials. Berry is aiming to incorporate 10% recycled content across its fast-moving consumer goods packaging as part of its “Impact 2025” sustainability strategy.

At the end of 2020, the packaging manufacturer concluded a supply agreement for chemically recycled PP from Spanish energy and petrochemical group Repsol (Madrid; www.repsol.com – see Plasteurope.com of 04.01.2021). In the future, Repsol will supply Berry with ISCC Plus-certified polyolefins from its “Reciclex” range.

The US company said it will use PP resin from chemical recycling to manufacture a food package for longtime global brand owners. The product is to be made at one of Berry’s existing European manufacturing facilities and launched in the upcoming quarter.

As part of the “EverMinds” programme, Borealis has been developing technologies and products for some time to support the transition from a linear to a circular economy, including its chemically recycled “Borcycle C” material group.

The company is also currently considering the construction of a plant for chemical recycling of post-consumer plastics waste at its Swedish site in Stenungsund (see Plasteurope.com of 28.04.2021). A feasibility study is currently being carried out with Swedish waste disposal company Stena Recycling (Gothenburg; www.stenarecycling.com).
