A range of closures for 26mm neck diameter PET bottles for use in the edible oil industry has been introduced by Bericap (Budenheim / Germany; www.bericap.com). Historically, the 29/21 neck weighing 2.74 g has been commonly used for one litre PET bottles in the industry. The new closure neck weighs only 1.37 g and has been developed by Bericap to support the move towards saving on costs and materials. The inner diameter of the new neck remains, eliminating the need for modifications of the filling nozzles while providing the same flow rate.
Cargill (Minneapolis, Minnesota / USA; www.cargill.com) has converted its 29/21 neck PET bottles into lighter weight 26/21 units in western Europe, using a full closure range developed and produced by Bericap. It is making the same conversion to its bottles in Brazil, where, since December 2010, Bericap Brazil has supplied its "CTC IP 26/13" closure with an inserted pourer. Cargill says that it has reduced its carbon footprint and resin costs by employing the closure and neck finish and is making savings in transport and operational costs.
