Bayer MaterialScience (Leverkusen / Germany; www.bayerbms.com) is completing the final stage of its “Dream Production” project to manufacture polyether polycarbonate polyols (PPPs) from CO2 – for the latest coverage see Plasteurope.com of 29.07.2013.
The Bayer subgroup said it has applied to Cologne district authorities for permission to build a EUR 15m production facility at Dormagen / Germany capable of producing 5,000 t/y of the polyurethane precursor. Most of the output will be earmarked for the premium mattress sector.
Start-up of the industrial-scale facility is now slated for 2016, about a year after the end of the pilot phase in 2015. The project was funded in part by the German research ministry, and the process and catalyst were developed in cooperation with RTWH Aachen University.
BMS said converters of polyols and polyurethanes have already expressed considerable interest in the new product.
