BASF (Ludwigshafen / Germany; www.basf.com) on 9 December held the ground-breaking ceremony for its Innovation Campus in Navi Mumbai / India. The company is investing about EUR 50m in the hub, due on stream in 2017, and which will expand its R&D presence in the Asia Pacific region. Once operational, the campus will house about 300 scientists engaged in polymer research, crop protection as well as process development.
The Mumbai hub will become the group’s second major R&D centre in Asia Pacific, next to its existing one in Shanghai / China, which opened its doors in late 2012 (see Plasteurope.com of 08.11.2012). The Indian campus will span 20,000 m2, and include technical facilities, logistics areas and a range of laboratories.
BASF currently employs about 2,250 workers in India, spread across eight production sites and sales offices as well as two R&D centres. The subcontinent was responsible for more than EUR 1 bn in group sales in 2013. By 2020, the German chemicals giant plans to locate 25% of its global R&D employees in Asia Pacific.
