New “Ecovio F Mulch” grade for agricultural film
German chemical giant BASF (Ludwigshafen; www.basf.com) has expanded its range of biodegradable plastic compounds by introducing “Ecovio F Mulch”, a new grade for use in agricultural films. The new material is a blend of the group’s existing “Ecoflex F Mulch” biodegradable polyester, mixed with polylactic acid. Not only does the introduction of the new grade do away with the need to compound, BASF says “Ecovio F Mulch” is also completely biodegradable and farmers can simply plough it under along with the remaining plants once harvest is over.

Aside from the time and cost savings achieved by not having to remove the film from the field, the new grade reportedly can be easily processed on conventional PE extrusion machines without extensive modifications, BASF says. Film made from “Ecovio F Mulch” can be used at a thickness of 10 micrometres without experiencing tears and perforations when put on the field; by comparison, conventional PE film is at least twice as thick, the group added.
The new grade is available in classic black, transparent as well as in colour and can be custom formulated for different vegetation times and climates. The grade complies fully with European standard EN 13432 with regard to biodegradability, compostability, compost quality and plant compatibility.
