In time for the new year, BASF (Ludwigshafen / Germany; www.basf.com) announced the successful commissioning of what it claims is the world’s largest oleum/sulphuric acid plant at the chemical group’s integrated site in Antwerp / Belgium. The plant has capacity to produce 420,000 t/y of SO3, which in turn is processed into oleum and sulphuric acid. Also known as fuming sulphuric acid, oleum is an important component for caprolactam.
