Oleum/Sulphuric acid plant commissioned in Antwerp / Important caprolactam component
In time for the new year, BASF (Ludwigshafen / Germany; www.basf.com) announced the successful commissioning of what it claims is the world’s largest oleum/sulphuric acid plant at the chemical group’s integrated site in Antwerp / Belgium. The plant has capacity to produce 420,000 t/y of SO3, which in turn is processed into oleum and sulphuric acid. Also known as fuming sulphuric acid, oleum is an important component for caprolactam.

The technical basic engineering know how for the facility was provided by Hugo Petersen (Wiesbaden / Germany; www.hugo-petersen.de), a subsidiary of German Chemieanlagenbau Chemnitz (CAC; www.cac-chem.de).
