Separation from PMMA business in Germany and Spain / "No global core operation"
BASF AG (HQ: D-67056 Ludwigshafen) is seeking interested parties for its business with polymethyl methycrylate plastics (PMMA). These operations include the manufacture and sale of granules, extruded and cast sheets of PMMA and of polycarbonate sheets. The BASF affiliates responsible for this business are Resart GmbH (PO Box 3440, D-66024 Mainz) and Critesa S.A. (Montcada i Reixac / Barcelona, Spain) which achieved total sales in 1996 of about DM 130m.
Resart GmbH, a member of the BASF Group since 1989, has about 260 employees in Mainz and Raunheim. The Raunheim site is, under a restructuring program which was started more than two years ago, to be closed down by the middle of this year; the facilities there will be concentrated in Mainz. When these measures have been concluded, Mainz will have a polymerization capacity of 22,000 t/y of PMMA; the capacity for sheet extrusion will be more than 12,000 t/y. Critesa S.A., which has about 80 employees, specializes in the manufacture of cast PMMA sheet, and has a capacity of more than 6,000 t/y.
BASF's Engineering Plastics Division, responsible for PMMA, will in future be concentrating on the core operations of polystyrene, styrene copolymers and engineering plastics; no possibilities, by contrast, are seen for the expansion of PMMA operations to a global core operation. For this reason and with the assistance of an international investment bank, interested parties are being sought whose strategy will ensure a successful continuation of the PMMA business.
