A. SCHULMAN
Work starts on joint Saudi PP plant / Warehouse opened in Turkey / Portfolio on display at "Plast Eurasia"
US plastics compounder and distributor A. Schulman (Akron, Ohio; www.aschulman.com) and joint venture partner National Petrochemical Industrial Company (Natpet, Jeddah / Saudi Arabia; www.natpetpp.com) have started construction of a PP compounding plant in Yanbu, on Saudi Arabia’s west coast – see Plasteurope.com of 12.06.2012.
The 50:50 joint venture – Natpet Schulman Specialty Plastic Compounds – will manufacture a range of tailor-made “Polyfort” and “Polyflam” flame-retardant compounds as well as others based on a variety of Natpet’s “Teldene” PP grades. Natpet produces a wide range of grades from its 400,000 t/y PP plant in Yanbu which is based on technology from LyondellBasell (Rotterdam / The Netherlands; www.lyondellbasell.com).
The 100,000 t/y compounding facility is scheduled to start commercial production in mid-2017. Output will serve markets in Europe, the Middle East, Africa (EMEA), Asia and India, although the company will focus on growing demand for durable goods, automotive and electrical & electronic applications in the Middle East, Africa and India. A. Schulman will sell and distribute PP compounds outside these geographies. A. Schulman said the joint venture will accelerate its expansion and visibility in its growth markets of EMEA and India.
For Natpet, the scheme is seen as crucial for creating further downstream projects by providing key ingredients to make automotive and appliance components. Matouq Jannah, Natpet’s managing director (O&M), said: “It helps us to broaden our product portfolio, develop differentiated and customised products, and enhance our R&D capability.”
Meanwhile, A. Schulman has opened a warehouse in Istanbul / Turkey, as the first phase of a project to build a masterbatch production plant – see Plasteurope.com of 13.04.2015. The warehouse will give customers in the Middle East and Africa faster access to materials produced at A. Schulman’s sites in Belgium and France. Once the masterbatch plant is operational, it will primarily address the needs of customers in the food and industrial packaging sectors, but A. Schulman added that it is also looking to serve other markets such as automotive and electrical & electronics.
The company is presenting a wide range of its products at the "Plast Eurasia" plastics processing exhibition (www.plasteurasia.com), which is being held in Istanbul from 3-6 December 2015. The portfolio being showcased includes a range of engineering composites from its recent acquisition of Citadel Plastics, more commonly known in Europe and the Middle East as "tetra-DUR".
