AUTOMOBILE RECYCLING
New association in Brussels / Reusable materials from shredder wastes
Some 10% of the hazardous waste generated in the European Union stems from the wrecks of old cars, according to James Currie, Director Environment of the European Commission. He was speaking at an event to mark the foundation of the ELV Foundation International (EFI, B-1000 Brussels; www.elvfoundation.org). For the authorities, this figure, of course, was reason enough to issue a directive on the recycling of end-of-life vehicles. The administrator of European environmental policy expects the new association to play a key role in the recycling of end-of-life vehicles (ELV) and other shredder wastes such as electrical-electronic scrap.

Driving force behind the founding of the EFI is a Belgian company, Salyp (B-8900 Ieper; www.salyp.com). Its goal is to find ways of economically recycling auto shredder residues, which consist mainly of thermoplastics (see Plasteurope.com 16, 1999). A pilot plant is currently being built at the company´s headquarters and is due to go on stream next year. The idea of a combination between economic constraints and ecological desires – “econogy” – is behind the birth of the EFI non-profit organisation. Once it has been set up, Salyp intends to withdraw from the association´s everyday affairs.

Former Belgian prime minister Wilfried Martens has been named chairman of the association. An illustrious group of leaders from industry, research and politics came together to celebrate its founding. Companies such as DaimlerChrysler, Dow, Ford, Honda, PSA, Recticel, Siemens and Toyota, for example, were present, as were various European shredding enterprises. A number of European associations and initiatives, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association ( www.japanauto.com), research institutes from the US and the UK, as well as a member of the European Parliament, reflected the international interest. At the end of March 2001, there will be another meeting in Brussels to deal with the official foundation formalities.
