US polyurethane foam makers adopt environmental standard based on Europe's “CertiPUR”
US manufacturers of flexible PU foam are developing an environmental and performance standard based on Europe’s “CertiPUR” voluntary foam certification programme. The country’s Polyurethane Foam Association (PFA; www.pfa.org) expects to launch the programme, called “CertiPUR-US”, in early 2008.
The initiative will aid consumer confidence by establishing voluntary physical performance and safety, health and environment standards for foams used in upholstered furniture, bedding and automotive seating, PFA says. A key difference between the US and European standards is that the US version will include physical performance standards to help quantify durability, consistency and comfort, the association adds.
"Consumer interest in environmental responsibility, health and safety is growing,” says PFA executive director Robert Luedeka. He adds that “PFA has received many complaints about imported furniture and bedding products manufactured in China using Chinese foam components.” Since its introduction two years ago, Europe’s CertiPUR standard has attracted 30 foam manufacturers, with several more in the pipeline, says the European Association of Flexible Polyurethane Foam Blocks Manufacturers (EUROPUR; www.europur.com).
