"Biostrength" additives for PLA polymers
Arkema (Colombes / France; www.arkema.com) has developed a range of additives for PLA polymers under the name "Biostrength". They include two impact modifiers – Biostrength 130 and 150 – and Biostrength 700, which is claimed to produce greater clarity and melt strength. An Arkema spokesperson said that a further modifier will be introduced in the near future to raise PLA's glass transition temperature (55 °C).

However, Biostrength materials are based on oil, which could restrict their use in polymers made of renewable raw materials. EU regulations dictate that the maximum content of polymers or other substances that are not based on renewable raw materials is 5%. With a higher glass transition temperature, decomposition by composting could probably not be guaranteed as the material does not sufficiently degrade at the temperature used for industrial compositing, normally around 60 °C. Arkema said that this is not a priority at the moment as the emphasis now should be on increasing the range of applications for PLA, with consideration given to recyclability at a later stage.
