APPRYL
New homo-PP for medical applications
The polypropylene manufacturers, Appryl (12, place de l´Iris, F-92062 Paris La Defense), a subsidiary of Elf Atochem and BP Chemicals, has brought a new graft homopolymer onto the market: Appryl 3250 MT2 with an MFI of 25, a high temperature resistance (haze 20) and a modulus of elasticity in bending of 1500 Mpa. These properties give injection moulded parts in Appryl 3250 MT2 an attractive appearance, comparable to that of statistical copolymers, with brilliant, transparent colours. These properties are particularly important for the production of syringes, protective covers for needles, laboratory pipettes and Petri dishes.

This new material has advantages for the processor in terms of the injection sequence. Cycle times are 5 to 20% shorter than those for traditional statistical copolymers, as a function of the geometry of the moulded part. The high crystallisation temperature of 127 °C reduces the graft effects of the colouring agents. Hence, when 3250 MT2 is used, it is possible to change the colouring agent without having to change the mould setting.
