Development of first bioplastic hydraulic caps / Reorganisation creates business units to focus on market sectors
Italian compounder, API (Mussolente; www.apiplastic.com), and hydraulics firm DLM (Opera / Italy; www.dlmtappi.com), have created the first fully biodegradable protective cap for quick connect couplings. The caps protect the delicate hydraulic connections in tractors and earthmoving machinery, but often fall off when in use. This prompted DLM to collaborate with API in developing a line of 100% biodegradable products that would be completely absorbed into the ground without harming the environment.

The new material, a special grade of API’s "Apinat Bio" brand has been developed to replicate the technical performance of traditional materials, such as PVC and styrene-ethylene-butadiene-styrene (SEBS)-based compounds. Bioplastic caps need to have good UV, temperature and weather resistance for long periods of time, which API accomplished by modifying the rheology of the base material and working on the relative composition of the constituents.
Meanwhile, API has reorganised its corporate structure to strengthen its competitive capacity and position itself for sustainable future growth. After a three-year study and supported by strategic hirings within the company, API has decided to focus on market application rather than on product. This has led to the creation of three separate business units. Footwear and Sporting Goods; Automotive and Technical Articles; and Packaging and Medical. API said the change has spurred greater efficiency and speed in responding to customers as well as boosting specialisation in specific markets.
