Low density sheet moulding compound introduced for automotive industry
US polyester resins specialist AOC (Collierville, Tennessee; www.aoc-resins.com) unveiled a low-density sheet moulding compound (SMC) at the “SPE automotive composites conference and exhibition” in Novi, Michigan / USA in September. The SMC system offers lower weight, superior strength, and “Class A” surface finish to meet the transportation industry’s demand for lighter and more fuel-efficient vehicles, the company said. The system is claimed to achieve a specific gravity of 1.2, making it comparable to aluminium.
AOC business manager, Mike Dettre, said: “AOC’s technical team has succeeded in making significant advances in SMC technology. The automotive industry is facing huge challenges to improve fuel efficiency and AOC is making a major impact towards achieving this goal.” The company said that the system is presently going through approvals with several OEMs and that production is expected to begin by the end of 2014.
