US masterbatch maker Ampacet (Tarrytown, New York; www.ampacet.com) has introduced a polymer processing aid with no per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) for blown film extrusion applications that is designed to perform as well as a fluoro-based additive.

Ampacet’s 1001316-N additive is designed to be used at the same or similar let down ratio (LDR) as its own conventional polymer processing aids, and similarly eliminates melt fracture, reduces die buildup for less downtime, and offers increased throughput. The company said the processing aid does not interfere with surface treatments such as printing and lamination and has no effect on sealing.

The supplier said the product is FDA food contact compliant and comparable in cost to fluoro-based polymer processing aids.

PFAS additives face increasing government restrictions and regulations due to its potential as a health hazard. Many states have regulated PFAS in food packaging, with many more planning steps to control the materials.
