German supermarket giant drops plastics from some UK packaging / Move to cardboard to cut 95 t/y
German supermarket chain Aldi (Essen; www.aldi.com) has announced a shift from plastic packaging to cardboard for its own-label four-pack beers and ciders in the UK, a move expected to eliminate 95 t/y of plastic packaging.

Luke Emery, Aldi’s plastics and packaging director, said, “Minimising plastics waste is important to both us and our customers, and we are always looking for ways to adapt our packaging. Moving our beer and cider to card packaging is another step in our fight against unwanted plastics.”

The change follows Aldi’s switch to fully recyclable own-label handwash packaging in May and the removal of single-use cutlery from its “Food To Go” range in September.
Last month Aldi announced it was working with US waste management and recycling firm TerraCycle (Trenton, New Jersey; www.terracycle.com) to encourage UK customers to recycle their empty medicine packets made from plastics and aluminium foil.
