AGOMER
Degussa's new acrylics spinoff starts up / Growth of 5% annually up to 2001
Agomer GmbH (PO Box 1345, D-63403 Hanau), the new MMA/PMMA offshoot of the Degussa group (HQ: D-60287 Frankfurt) started trading on 1 April. The company takes in Degussa's MMA production at Wesseling, Germany, as well polymerisation capacities and the moulding activities of subsidiaries Para-Chemie GmbH (Hauptstr. 53, A-2440 Gramatneusiedel) and Paraglas Sociedada de Acrilicos Lda (Apartado 10, P-2135 Samora Correia) – see Plasteurope.com No 20, 1996. At a press conference in Hanau, Germany, Degussa executives stressed that the new stand-alone company will have more flexibility to deal with customers and that the separate organisation could facilitate strategic alliances or joint ventures, possibly with partners outside Germany.

Employing 720, including 100 in R&D, Agomer has capacities at four European locations to produce 80,000 t/y of MMA and around 40,000 t/y of polymer, generating annual sales of DEM 350m. Around 35% of turnover is in specialities such as binding agents, resins, pigments, glues and additives. In third place in the European PMMA market, behind Röhm and Atohaas but ahead of MMA world market leader ICI and BASF subsidiary Resart GmbH, general manager Dr. Hans-Peter Schaufler estimates Agomer's share at around 20%.

The intermediates portfolio of the new Degussa subsidiary, which according to parent company managing board member Professor Heribert Offermanns operates in the black, is worth DEM 125m annually. Turnover in PMMA granulate totals DEM 60m. Agomer's overall sales are projected to rise by 5% annually to DEM 450m by financial year 2000/2001, with the share of specialities widening to 45%. Expansion will be targeted in reactive resins, intermediates for transparent noise protection walls, plastics additives/glues and coatings resins. A new plant for plastics additives with an annual capacity of 12,000 t/y is to be built at Wesseling.
