AES / TROESTER
New process for TPV/EPDM hybrid profiles
The leading global supplier of thermoplastic elastomers, Advanced Elastomer Systems NV/SA (AES, Europe: Baazellaan 1, B-1140 Brussels), has, in association with the elastomer extrusion specialist, Paul Troester Maschinenfabrik (Am Brabrinke 1-4, D-30519 Hannover), developed a new coextrusion process for the production of hybrid profiles of TPV (“Santoprene”) and EPDM. The EPDM rubber compound is passed through a 90 mm vacuum extruder and the Santoprene through a 60 mm extruder into a two-component head. The two products are extruded simultaneously in a profile die. For full vulcanisation of the EPDM profile, the EPDM/TPV system runs through a standard vulcanisation unit. The profiles produced by the single-step process have outstanding adhesive strength and can be easily coloured, say the two companies. The main fields of application will be complex static or dynamic sealing systems and multifunctional systems in automotive design.
