ADDMASTER
Specialist masterbatch company will formulate but not manufacture / Non-commodity sectors
A novel approach to masterbatch supply is being provided by a recently-formed UK company. AddMaster (UK) Ltd (Staffordshire Technology Park, Beaconside, GB-Stafford ST18 0AR) will concentrate on the formulation of special masterbatches, covering sectors such as antimicrobial, flame retardants and UV, but will contract out all its manufacturing requirements to other companies. In this way it hopes to be able to bring a high level of innovation to specialist formulations without having to invest – and keep fully operational – expensive compounding equipment.
“Our time is focussed entirely on new, innovational additives,” says managing director Paul Morris. “All of our investment will directly benefit our customers by keeping them at the cutting edge of current masterbatch and compounding technology.”
Morris has signed up five manufacturers to operate under licence to AddMaster and discussions are continuing with other potential producers. All five have batch production facilities that AddMaster can employ for trials and sampling work. The capabilities of each toll manufacturer will be matched against the compounding task required.
“AddMaster will use the core competences of these individual companies to give the best product to its customers,” explains Morris, a former sales manager at Clariant and commercial director for Wells Plastics.
Response to the launch of AddMaster has been overwhelming, says Morris, and a number of large accounts have been established. Most are for film, fibre and sheet applications. New customers, further materials/additive sources and the suitability of other toll producers are currently being researched in mainland Europe.
AddMaster has moved into new offices adjacent to the Stafford University complex on a site purpose-built for high-tech companies so that they can call on graduates from Stafford, Keele and Stoke-on-Trent universities. A number of research projects are underway and AddMaster hopes to launch an antimicrobial product with full food contact approval in the near future.
