Expansion of medical devices facility in Ireland
Biopharmaceutical company Abbvie (North Chicago, Illinois / USA; www.abbvie.com) is investing EUR 40m in an expansion of its medical devices manufacturing plant in Ballytivnan, Sligo / Ireland. The expansion is expected to take place over the next four years, creating 50 new jobs.
Including the new investment, Abbvie said it will have invested more than EUR 134m in the Ballytivnan site and other manufacturing operations in Ireland since 2013, when the group was launched as an independent biopharmaceutical company. Abbvie has 13 manufacturing sites across the USA, Europe, Asia and Puerto Rico, of which three are in Ireland – two in Sligo and one in Cork.
The Ballytivnan site has facilities for precision engineering, plastics moulding and metrology (the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement). It currently produces drug delivery devices, including a pen-style injector used to treat auto-immune conditions.
