Sabic (Riyadh / Saudi Arabia; www.sabic.com) outlined its growth strategy on 16 October at “K 2019”, with sustainability and technology being key words in its drive to tackle “megatrends”. Executive VP petrochemicals Abdulrahman Al-Fageeh said one of the company’s circular initiatives includes the launch of PC resin based on renewable feedstock, which is oil derived from secondary sources such as the pulp and paper industry.

The bio-based PC belongs within Sabic’s new “Trucircle” initiative of circular solutions, and a life cycle assessment done by the company shows potential “reductions in carbon footprint (up to 50%) and fossil depletion impacts (up to 35%)” for production of the new PC resin compared to that for its fossil-based counterpart. The new polycarbonate will be produced in Bergen op Zoom / The Netherlands, with eventual global supply on the company’s agenda.

The Saudi chemical group also has a new caps and closures technology and innovation centre in Geleen / The Netherlands. The facility will also deal with pumps, dispensing systems and other product delivery mechanisms for beverages, food and non-food applications. In 2018, Sabic expanded its caps and closures portfolio – see Plasteurope.com of 13.07.2018.
