UK supermarket group Morrisons (Bradford; www.morrisons-corporate.com) has opened a new recycling facility in Fife, UK, to process “hard to recycle” food packaging materials such as chocolate wrappers, crisp packets, and food film.
Morrisons announced in 2021 that it was entering a joint partnership with compatriot recycling plant specialists Yes Recycling (Chesham; www.yesrecycling.org) to develop the facility. At full capacity, the site will recycle 15,000 t of post-consumer plastics packaging a year into flake and pellets, the group said.

The chain said it was collecting soft plastics at all of its supermarkets throughout the UK to create what it claims is the first supermarket plastics “closed recycling loop”. Customers are being encouraged to rinse their soft plastics, bag them, bring them to stores, and put them into collection bins in Morrison foyers.
Materials will also be provided by Cireco Scotland (Glenrothes; www.cirecoscotland.co.uk), a waste management firm which operates Fife Council’s household kerbside collection service.
